Providing personalised, compassionate and affirming
support throughout the reproductive journey
✷
Welcome!
My name is Joey Carvalho (they/them), I'm a full spectrum doula, here to provide compassionate, personalised and affirming support at every stage of your reproductive journey.I began my training in September 2024, and am currently accepting clients on a low-cost basis as I continue my learning.

A bit about me...
I'm 27 and live in Hackney, where I've spent the vast majority of my life. I enjoy internet rabbit holes, watching TV, tending to my plant children and snacking on cheese.I'm also latino, chronically ill, neurodiverse, non-binary and queer as all hell.Birth work has always had a special place in my heart. Multiple family members had been birth workers before I came along, and it felt like something that was woven into me from the start. After a few years working as a nanny, then a handpoke tattoo artist, and my experiences navigating the NHS as a trans person with a sprinkle of chronic illness, I heeded the call and made the leap to become a doula. I am eager to help give families the best beginnings possible, especially those forced into margins nobody deserves.

Why Hire a Birth Doula?
What are the benefits and risks of having doula support during labour and birth? The benefits include;✷ Higher likelihood of having a vaginal birth without instrumental assistance, and✷ Lower risk of complications compared to not having a doula.✷ Lower risk of having a caesarean section✷ People who hire a doula for their birth are less likely to use pain medication, and more likely have better feelings about their birth afterwards as well as having a shorter overall labour. The risks... There aren't any risks associated with having a birth doula!
Having the right doula for you (make sure you can see yourself spending 48 hours in close proximity with one another!) can make all the difference in your baby's arrival.

Training and Credentials
It is deeply important to me to examine and be conscious of my biases so I can work from a place of cultural humility. This has informed my choice of training pathways and is at the forefront of my learning, unlearning and practice.

Testimonials
"I was privileged to mentor Joey during their first birth doula experience and saw in them a rare natural talent for this work. During a long VBAC labour, Joey took the lead when appropriate and showed confidence in making recommendations for positioning, movement and comfort measures. They asked great questions and took suggestions as needed. Joey is an excellent advocate, coach and listener. As their mentor, I know that Joey continues to educate themselves on the essential tools and nuances of being a birth doula. I have complete confidence in Joey's ability to work with clients independently - they will be a gift to anyone that welcomes them into their birth experience."Robin (she/her)

"Our paths crossed Joeys as they were being mentored by our beloved doula and we can’t help but feel it was fate that they were present for the birth of our son. As the birthing parent, I was a VBAC hopeful and Joey helped me become a VBAC success and I definitely attribute the support I received in this dream becoming a reality. It was a long labor that included a middle of the night call (two nights in fact) and labouring at home, as well as labouring at the hospital. Joey’s natural ability to offer suggestions, love, advocacy and support in such an effortless manner was amazing to witness. The attention to emotional needs as well as physical, is something I will forever be in awe of. From creating laughter to focused support, every action came with such intention. As a second time birthing parent, it was hard for me to believe this was the first hands on birth experience Joey had! They are built for this and I’m so incredibly honoured to be a small part of their journey. It started with offering effective suggestions and support through my third trimester of pregnancy to now still keeping in touch with our family at 5 months postpartum, Joey is a gift. Thank you, we adore you!"
